Karen Blackburn Dance Academy

Academy History

The Karen Blackburn Dance Academy (KBDA) first opened its doors in 2001, under the name of Loose Moose Theatre Arts, where the enjoyment of dance and exploring creativity has always been at the heart of our school. We encourage students of all ages to experience the joy of dance and our dedicated teachers have seen many of them grow and develop into professional dancers, teachers and graduates. Students wishing to pursue a career in dance have furthered their training to study at renowned colleges including the Royal Ballet School, the English National Ballet School, Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance, Bird College, Performers College, Laine Theatre Arts and Urdang Academy.

Karen Blackburn, Principal and Founder, received her early training with Phyllis & Hilda Skinns (Hull) and Louise Browne (York), before furthering her training at the Urdang Academy and the Royal Academy of Dance in London. She danced professionally for many years both in the UK and abroad before becoming a freelance choreographer and teacher. Karen has always enjoyed a passion for teaching and is a registered teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance and the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance. Karen is also an adjudicator with the British and International Federation of Festivals.

KBDA academy provides a wide range of theatre arts disciplines where students attend for a variety of reasons, whether it be to build confidence, make new friends, keep fit or to aspire to a career in the theatre profession. We offer excellent training where the focus is always on the individual and work hard with students to maximise their potential and help them to achieve their own personal goals. Our dance academy is very much part of the community with many of our students supporting and performing at local events.

KBDA pupils consistently attain outstanding results both in the RAD Ballet and ISTD Modern examinations with on average over 75% of distinctions with many students achieving 90 marks and over.

Today, our very youngest students are introduced to the world of dance through a range of classes that have been specifically designed to ensure their is first steps are educational, exciting and magical.

KBDA is not just about dance. It’s about passion, dedication, respect and support. It’s about extended family and building life long friendships.
