Contemporary dance is a popular and exciting dance genre that developed during the mid 20th century in Central Europe and the USA. Contemporary dance in Britain grew and developed from Modern dance in the USA strongly influenced from great pioneers of this genre such as Martha Graham, Jose Limon, Merce Cunningham amongst others.
At KBDA, we offer introductory Rambert Contemporary Technique classes from Year 4 in addition to exploring the genre using student choreography and improvisation. We also offer the newly created ISTD Contemporary syllabus (Year 7+) devised by Ross McKim MA, PhD, NBS (IDP). This syllabus, starting at Intermediate Foundation level, follows a set of themes including contractions, spirals, and the use of gravity, weight and suspension.
