WHAT IS MODERN THEATRE DANCE?
Modern dance originated in America before travelling to the rest of the world and the style is closely linked with contemporary dance.
At KBDA we follow the ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing) syllabus which is energetic with lots of travelling steps, high kicks, leaps and turns. Modern dance is well known for its theatrical qualities and for preparing students for the styles of dance often seen in West End and Broadway shows.
Children who participate in examinations will receive a certificate issued by the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing.Children are also able to attend classes simply for fun and fitness.
At KBDA children are introduced to Modern through our Emerald and Ruby Ballet & Modern classes where we touch upon the Primary syllabus. At this level, the emphasis is on creativity using imaginative ideas and stories to help the children learn and perform the steps.
Grade 1 – Grade 6 Modern Theatre Dance
From Grade 1 Modern, children will have the opportunity to train towards exam syllabus although taking exams is optional. As the children progress through the grades they will begin to learn more challenging vocabulary, building on the fundamentals of modern dance.
Vocational exams – Intermediate foundation, Intermediate, Advanced 1& 2
As students progress through the exam syllabus they have the opportunity to study the higher levels listed above. Vocational exams are designed for students who wish to pursue a career in dance or teaching of dance, although we encourage students to also participate in classes but who do not wish to enter for exams.
